Brief background and references


SynapsWorld started in 2004 as a project in the public sector and was developed in conjunction with municipalities, private parties, colleges and universities as well as both Swedish and international public- and governmental organizations.


The tool and method were developed further at LUCSUS (Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies) and was situated there until the spring of 2009. In 2009, SynapsWorld became its own company and is now an integrated impact assessment tool for sustainable development.


To the right is a short list of projects where the tool where used and thus helped shaping tool up to the present day with its current name, content and appearance.

  1. Synaps Öresund, EU project Operational analysis and skills development for sustainable development in the Öresund Regional Municipalities (Malmö, Kristianstad and Trelleborg in Sweden and Fredensborg in Denmark). Included SYNAPS processes on detailed plans, converting rental apartments into cooperative housing, constructing housing for the elderly, developing Kristianstad into a leading Climate Municipality, constructing roads, developing and upgrading the marinas of Smygehamn, Gislöv and Skåre in Trelleborg.


  1. Öresund Regional Baltic Sea Strategy, EU-project, the Öresund Committee.


  1. EU Structural Funds Program starting in 2007 (the wording of Goals 2 and 3).


  1. As part of SIDA training for provincial officials from China in strategic environmental assesment through Ramboll Natura.


  1. As part of SIDA training for officials from the Chinese environmental protection agency SEPA.


  1. As part of the LUCSUS international masters programs LUMES (Lund University Masters Programme in Environmental Studies and Sustainability Science).


  1. United Nations Development Programme, UNDP project for Turkey Integration of Sustainable Development Into Sectoral Policies Project, together with Lund University. Resulted in the Turkish custom tools at government level.


  1. Union Baltic Cities, the EU project MATRUSCHKA Stakeholder Involvement in which the city of Malmö were included as participants. SYNAPS processes at Lindängelund in Lindängen in Malmö.
